DA or ‘domain authority’ is a blogging term you’ll often come up against. This is a metric developed by Moz that predicts how your site ranks on Google. It’s one of the common industry standards used by brands or PR’s when they determine how much they can pay you for blog content.
In short, this is the score that Moz ranks your blog on.
The score ranges from 0-100, with 0 being brand new blogs and 100 being basically Google. Brands often use DA as a determining factor on who to work with and from my experience, you need a minimum of 20 before you can start earning money from your blog.
Also, the higher your DA, the higher up you’ll be on Google.
I run multiple blogs including Mums The Wurd, Vegan etc and more. I once reached the dizzying heights of 31 on one of those but am now around 26 – which is still pretty decent for a blog! Anything over 45 for a blog is pretty much unheard of to be honest!
Here are 8 things you can do to improve your blog DA score…

1. CREATE AMAZING CONTENT
This may seem like I’m stating the obvious, but amazing content is important! Great content must be well written, formatted correctly and easy to read.
It has a better chance of being read, shared and will encourage readers to read other posts you write too. Bad content scares off readers and this increases your bounce rate which is bad in Google’s eyes.
2. SORT OUT YOUR SEO
Alt-tags, keywords, meta data, subheadings.. You NEED to be doing it all.. for every post, all the time.
If that all sounds like a foreign language to you, read this post on 5 Ways To Optimise Your Blog Posts For SEO. Basically, the better your blog post SEO, the more favourably Moz will see you = improved blog DA score!
3. FIX BROKEN LINKS
I have written a whole post on how to find and fix broken links which you can read here.
4. WRITE SHAREABLE POSTS
Moz look at social sharing when determining your DA score, so content is king! If tons of people on Facebook and Twitter are shouting about how amazing your content is, it will reflect in your ranking.
Furthermore, if your content is widely shared, you have a higher chance of getting those link backs.
5. INTERNAL LINKING STRUCTURE
One way that Google determines how decent your site is, is by how easy it is to move around it.
Internal linking makes it easier to navigate; by linking to other, related posts within each post. This not only shows Google how accessible your site is, but also that you’re an authority on a subject because you just have so much to say on the topic!
6. ACCESSIBILITY
Is your site mobile friendly? Does it take 7634 hours to load?
Ensure the theme you have looks just as good on mobile devices. You should also do regular speed checks on your site and implement the suggestions that are made.
7. GET BACKLINKS
Probably the most effective way to improve your DA is by getting as many backlinks as possible. You can write for online publications or guest post on blogs that have a higher DA than yours.
If you’ve written a similar post to a friend, you can also ask them for a cheeky link swap, where you are linking to each other’s posts in your own one.
8. SHOUT ABOUT IT
If your content is amazing and ticks all the boxes above, then you need to shout about it from the rooftops.
Schedule multiple promotional tweets out, share on instagram stories and get pinning on Pinterest!
It takes effort and a while to improve your blog DA score but with these steps underway you should see a difference in no time! What’s your biggest hurdle in improving your DA?
